What is the Section 8 Housing Certificate Program?

The certificate program and voucher program are the same thing. It can be confusing because all of the different regional terminologies. The Section 8 Rental Certificate program increases affordable housing choices for very low-income households by allowing families to choose privately owned rental housing. Families apply to a local public housing authority (PHA) or administering governmental agency for a Section 8 certificate. For example, when you apply for Section 8 in San Diego or anywhere else, the PHA pays the landlord the difference between 30 percent of the household’s adjusted income and the unit’s rent after.

Several rental assistance programs in Las Vegas, Nevada exist under Section 8. The Section 8 voucher and certificate programs together help over 1.4 million households in the United States by paying landlords the difference between what the household can afford and the rent for the unit. The administering PHA inspects the housing units to make sure they comply with HUD quality standards. Landlords must agree to accept no more than fair market rent. Certificates are “tenant-based”: The qualifying households may use them in any rental unit where the landlord agrees to participate in the program. Can I apply for Section 8 and Food Stamps at the same office?

No. The Food Stamp program (SNAP) and the Section 8 housing program are two separate departments. If you qualify, then you should seek out the SNAP office in Las Vegas, Nevada. You must apply for SNAP in Atlanta, Georgia for example or any where else separately. The process is always free.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as the Food Stamp Program, helps families and individuals buy groceries. If eligible, clients will receive an EBT card (similar to a debit card) which will be reloaded monthly with an allotted amount of money to be used to purchase food. The food bank’s SNAP Outreach Team will guide applicants through the SNAP application process, help them prepare for an interview with a SNAP caseworker, and answer general questions about the SNAP program.
