The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is responsible for overseeing rental assistance programs like Section 8 and public Housing. These rental assistance programs help people of low income obtain affordable housing in their area. The program will pay about 70% of the tenants rent. Applications are free and can be found at your local housing authority when applications are being accepted. The tenant still does have to pay about 30% of the remaining rent and utilities.
What is the Public housing program?
Public housing is another form of rental assistance. The difference is that the tenant will live in a property owned by the Miami, Florida Housing Authority. These are called, project based vouchers. In the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program, the tenant can find their own apartment or house to rent, as appose to living in a housing project.

Can I apply for Section 8 and Food Stamps (SNA) at the same office?
No. The Food Stamp program (SNAP) is ran separately and actually has no affiliation with the Miami Florida Housing Authority. Applicants must apply for SNAP in Miami, Florida or any where else separately. There is never any charge to apply.
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), used to be called the Food Stamp Program. low income applicants can apply to receive benefits. If eligible, they will receive an EBT card (similar to a debit card) which will be reloaded monthly with an allotted amount of money to be used to buy food. The food bank’s SNAP Outreach Team will guide applicants through the SNAP application process, help them prepare for an interview with a SNAP caseworker, and answer general questions about the SNAP program.
